In many instances, once the drilling target has been identified by the 3D seismic, it is recognized that the best development approach may be to drill one well horizontally following the geological bed containing the oil, rather that to drill a large number of vertical holes through the bed. Usually the diameter of the well that intersects the oil bearing strata is only five inches in diameter. If the formation is only ten feet thick, the geometry of a vertical penetration only provides 150 square feet of well exposure to the oil producing formation. By drilling a five inch hole horizontally for one thousand feet within the oil bearing strata, the well’s exposure to the pay zone becomes 15,700 square feet of exposure. This factor alone can increase individual well performance by a factor of 10-100. In some instances, commercial production can be established in formations never before considered to be capable of oil and gas production.
